Ugbrooke is set in a serene Devon valley, within sweeping Capability Brown parkland and its characteristic chain of lakes and ponds. These water features, together with the woodland, copses and undulating hills, provide pheasant and duck shooting of the most testing standard.
The drives themselves have been established over centuries, and continue to evolve. Alexander was delighted to find the 9th Lord Clifford’s game book (his Great Great Great Uncle) from 1896 recording bags and drives from areas in and around the Estate which are still being shot today. The 9th Lord started the shoot at Ugbrooke Park when he returned from his travels, hunting buffalo in America with General Custer’s expedition!
Guns enthuse about the Top of Winstow with its high, fast birds; The Right Bank, arguably the most beautiful drive with the stunning backdrop of the house over the lake delivering a continuous flow of challenging birds, and Rock, Furze and Burrows Park are not to be overlooked; situated in one long deep valley, lined by an avenue of ancient trees where the birds fly from high trees across to higher trees!
